A huge 15 m. statue of Shiva towers over the town and has an overwhelming presence. The statue, which is only a couple of years old, is in a complex which encompasses the 500-year-old Shiva temple.

With the roaring sea to the west, the towering hills to the east and the coconut and areca groves nearby, the temple attracts a lot of devotees. The temple is covered with Chalukya and Kadamba sculptures in the Dravidian style and is believed to be located on the spot where Ravana flung the cloth covering the Atma Linga at Gokarna while lifting it. Two life-size elephants in concrete stand guard at the steps leading to the temple. The temple has several other beautiful carvings and statues that date back to a few centuries. There is also a huge fort behind the temple said to have been renovated by Tipu sultan, the ruler of

Cozy Canopy: Natural thicket formed by the roots of trees and shrubs. A cool and shady area to relax, unaffected by the sun’s heat at any time of the day.

Mystery Creek: A crack in the rocks formed by an earthquake several million years ago. It is believed that Lord Narasimha made his way through this long creek leading to a cave near the temple, which is how the temple was named. This is a good place to spot otters, locally called “ Neer Nai”.

Narasimha Temple: A temple dedicated to Lord Narasimha built several years ago on the top of the island. Devotees visit this temple shrine for an annual yatra in January.
Karwar Kurumgad 2007

Abandoned Tower: Built years ago with the idea of utilizing it as a lighthouse. Another neighbouring island (Devgad Island) deeper into the sea was found more suitable and hence this tower was abandoned. The suitability of this tower to hoist a windmill and generate adequate power for the island’s needs is being considered.

Fort walls & Canons: Many kings of different dynasties, including those of the Vijayanagar Empire, Bijapur and Sonda kings, have ruled this island. In AD 1705, Basalinga Nayak of Sonda fought a battle with the British from this island.

Overview of the destination

Devbagh beach Reort (DBR) at Karwar is a destination in itself. A island of sorts cut off from the main land by an estuary, its is located at the point where the Kali river meets the Arabian sea. The beach is one long stretch of clean sand. Along the ebach are Casuarina groves, among which accomodation is available. Its a beautiful place, not crowded by too many people and a large area to find your own privacy. A good option for stay up to 3 days.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
We stayed at Jungle Lodges Devbagh Beach Resort (DBR) - so frankly, can't say much on eating options elsewhere. Meals at DBR are good with sufficient variety and catering to a range of tastes. Though no 5-star buffetts here, meals are enjoyable.

Activities & things to do
Water sports are available though snorkelling/diving is difficult as the sea bed is churned a lot by the Kali river emptying its waters close to the island. The morning nature walk is interesting though no major wildlife can be seen.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
